It reveals how fertilized chicken eggs serve as naturally sterile, self-contained, and cost-effective systems for drug development, vaccine production, tissue engineering, and disease modeling, embodying the idea of being “simple in form, yet extraordinary in potential.”

Rooted in centuries of scientific use, eggs have gained renewed attention amid the growing need for sustainable and ethical research models. Positioned at the intersection of innovation and sustainability, this book connects the evolving role of eggs to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating their contribution to humane and eco-conscious scientific advancement.

Structured into six chapters, it traces the historical timeline, anatomy, and physiology of eggs before delving into in ovo and ex ovo technologies, egg yolk antibodies, exosomes, and embryonic applications in cancer, tissue, and pharmacological research. It concludes with future perspectives, detailed protocols, and ethical considerations.

Written for scientists, students, veterinarians, and research enthusiasts, this comprehensive review bridges biology, biotechnology, and sustainability, serving as an essential reference and educational resource in contemporary biomedical innovation.

Dr. Amirul Islam Mallick, MVSc, PhD, FRSB (UK), is a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata (IISER K), India. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, with particular emphasis on emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases that pose significant challenges to global health. Trained in veterinary science and biotechnology, he brings an interdisciplinary perspective that integrates microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology to address complex problems in disease biology.

Following his doctoral training in biotechnology, Professor Mallick undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto, Canada, where he developed expertise in infectious diseases and host immune responses. At IISER Kolkata, he has established an active, well-recognized research program in avian research and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals. In addition to his research activities, he is deeply involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research mentorship, and interdisciplinary scholarship. His work contributes to advancing One Health approaches, antimicrobial stewardship, and translational research in both academic and community settings. He serves on the Editorial boards of The Microbe, Gut Pathogens, and Frontiers in Immunology.

Dr. Shahrior Behboudi, DVM, PhD, is Professor of Immunology in the Correlates of Immune Protection Division at the Bristol Veterinary School, UK. His research focuses on host-pathogen interactions and on the identification of protective immune responses to support the development of next-generation vaccines. He specializes in viral and bacterial diseases of poultry and pioneered the development of a cell-free vaccine against Marek's disease using feather follicle stem cells. His work also explores non-antibiotic strategies for controlling bacterial infections in livestock. Professor Behboudi has developed innovative immunological tools to study conventional and non-conventional T cells in chickens. He serves on the BBSRC Committee A and is Editor-in-Chief of Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology.

Dr. Ozan Gundogdu, MSc, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Infection Biology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where he leads the Enterics Research Team. His research investigates the biology, virulence, and control of enteric bacterial pathogens, particularly Campylobacter jejuni, using microbiology, bioinformatics, and multi-omics approaches. He has led major research projects funded by the Wellcome Trust and BBSRC, focusing on zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and host–pathogen interactions. Professor Gundogdu supervises postgraduate researchers, contributes to international research collaborations and scientific advisory boards. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK, and serves on the editorial boards of Gut Pathogens and Microbial Genomics.

Publication Date:

24 December 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Singapore

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9789819247066

Format:

Hardback
