It discusses various aspects such as genebank resources, valuation of germplasm, genomics-assisted trait discovery and their utilization for cultivar development. PGRs are the backbone of crop improvement program essential for reaching global food security. Commercial crop production has good export value and provides adequate support for the growth of the national economy. In a similar manner, potential crops have rich potential to be cultivated in a wider area with fewer inputs and constitute great nutritional value. Hence, for sustainable production of commercial and potential crops, efficient use and management of horticultural PGRs are equally important.

Traditional methods of PGRs' management are being challenged by the ever-changing needs, priorities, climate, technologies, and policies. To address this issue of sustainable management of PGRs, there is a need to create awareness among the various stakeholders in a scientific manner covering all aspects from conservation to utilization. This book also discusses advances in tools and techniques used for phenotyping, genotyping, and genomic-assisted trait discovery.

The target audience for this book are research scholars, scientists and academicians involved in the field of utilization and conservation of PGRs. This book serves as a reference material to postgraduate students studying commercial or potential crops.

Dr. Kuldeep Tripathi is currently working as a Scientist at the Division of Germplasm Evaluation, ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, India. He has made enormous contributions to plant genetic resources management, including pre-breeding and genetic enhancement of pulses. His work at ICAR-NBPGR on legumes has brought to his credit three Indian pulse core sets developed in lentil, pea and cowpea (from entire Indian national genebank collections), and 24 legume genetic stocks registered and gene sequences deposited in the NCBI. He has also collaborated with ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, to develop two varieties of mung bean and lentil for commercial cultivation. He has published research papers exclusively on pulses in peer-reviewed national and international journals.

Dr. Jyoti Kumari is currently working as a Principal Scientist, ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, India. She obtained her Master’s and doctoral degrees from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in the discipline of genetics in 2002 and 2005 respectively. Her major scientific contribution includes mega characterization and evaluation of ~22,000 wheat germplasm, and development of core (2226 acc.) and minicore (224 acc.) set from the entire wheat germplasm conserved in the Indian national genebank. She has identified several accessions with unique traits including high popping accession in pearlmillet, waxy lines in maize, high grain protein, high zinc content, powdery mildew and spot blotch tolerant accessions in wheat. She has developed four varieties in lentil and mungbean, and registered 33 genetic stocks with Plant Germplasm Registration Committee.

Dr. Hanuman Lal Raiger is a Principal Scientist (Agricultural Statistics) and Network Coordinator at All India Coordinated Research Network (AICRN) on Potential Crops, ICAR-NBPGR. He has been working on underutilized crops since 1998. Dr. Raiger obtained his B.Sc in Agriculture from Rajasthan Agricultural University Bikaner in 1992 and M.Sc. in Agricultural Statistics from Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi in 1994. He completed his Ph.D. with specialization in Biometrics (Statistical Genetics) from IARI in 1998. He has an experience of 25 years of research, teaching and extension activities of underutilized crops. He has published more than 60 research articles and three books in journals of well-repute. Six varieties of potential crops has been released by the Raiger Association, AICRN on Potential Crops, NBPGR.

Dr. Rakesh Singh is currently Head of Division of Genomic Resources, ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi and has more than 25 years of research experience in the area of molecular biology and biotechnology. His research areas of interest are large-scale characterization of germplasm and development of molecular marker-based cores, genomic resources generation and, development of novel molecular markers for characterization of diversity in agri-horticultural crops. Dr. Singh largely focused on basic and strategic research on genomic resource generation and characterization of genetic diversity in agri-horticultural crops that led to the publication of 117 peer-reviewed research articles of high impact, 7 book chapters, 15 popular articles, two policy/strategy papers, and three copyrights.

Dr. Sunil Archak is a Principal Scientist and ICAR-National Fellow at the ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, India, in the areas of PGR Informatics and PGR Policy. He has 26 years of experience working on plant genetic resources including large-scale characterization of germplasm. He was instrumental in establishing National Genomic Resources Repository and a PGR Informatics Facility at NBPGR. He has developed many web-apps and mobile apps for enhancing access to PGR information including PGR portal. He represented India in FAO-ITPGRFA governing body meetings at Kigali (2017), Rome (2019) and Delhi (2022). He is currently the co-chair of the Treaty Working Group on MLS. He also represents India in FAO-CGRFA and CBD meetings.

Dr. Gyanendra Pratap Singh currently holds the position of the Director at ICAR-NBPGR.
