Genetically Modified Animal Models in Biomedical Research

Pramod Kumar R | Mukesh Kumar Gupta | Ramachandra S. G. | Suhas Tukaram Mhaske

Science / Biotechnology

The various methods for creating genetically modified animal models and their different applications in biomedical research are covered in this book. There are chapters on genetically modified animals used for infectious diseases, such as bacterial and viral diseases, as well as non-infectious disease conditions, such as metabolic, neurological, cardiovascular, and reproductive disorders. The book also covers genetically modified animal models for xenotransplantation, immunology, drug discovery and development as well as the ethical issues in animal modelling.

Genetically modified animal models have become an important tool in present day biomedical research. Genetic modification of animals includes modification of their genetic material by adding, changing or eliminating certain DNA sequences in a manner that do not occur naturally. By using CRISPR, gene silencing, and other genetic engineering techniques to make sure the organisms are accurately representing humans, scientists may now create precise animal models. These animal models help to unravel gene function at the molecular and cellular level, as well as their role in the physiology and pathology of the intact organism. Several models have been developed that replicate diseases in humans, thereby providing understanding on disease mechanisms and consequently ideas for prevention and therapy.

This book is meant for scientists and researchers working in the fields of animal models, biomedicine and genetics.
