Microbial-Fungal Interactions
Impacts on Plant and Crop Health
Masudulla Khan
This book explores the role of fungi in agriculture and ecosystems. It explains how fungi interact with plants, microbes, and the environment, and how these interactions can affect crop health either positively or negatively.
The chapters begin with an introduction to fungal diversity and genetics, followed by a focus on beneficial fungi such as mycorrhizae, lichens, and endophytes. It also examines complex interactions involving fungi, bacteria, and plant-parasitic nematodes that influence plant diseases. Other chapters highlight fungi’s role as decomposers, their use in biotechnology, their potential as biocontrol agents, and their ability to serve as bioindicators. Important plant-pathogenic fungi are also discussed, along with the harmful effects of mycotoxins and the broader applications of fungi in human welfare.
This volume of the 'Fungal Biology' book series is a useful resource for students, researchers, and professionals in agricultural science, microbiology, plant pathology, and environmental studies. It is especially valuable for those interested in understanding how fungi impact plant health, soil ecology, and sustainable farming practices.
Dr. Masudulla Khan is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Botany at Women’s College, Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh, India. Previously, he has researched plant disease complexes involving fungi, nematodes, and bacteria. He holds a Ph.D. in Botany from Aligarh Muslim University, earned in 2019. His research interests include plant pathology, fungal interactions, nematology, and microbial ecology. He has qualified prestigious national exams, including the CSIR-UGC NET-JRF with a national rank, and the ICAR-NET conducted by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board. In recognition of Dr Khan's work, he received the Young Botanist Award in Plant Pathology and Nematology at an international conference hosted by Sher-e-Kashmir University, Jammu & Kashmir, India. He has authored and reviewed multiple scientific articles and has served as editor for several academic books published with international publishers. His ongoing work continues to contribute to the understanding of plant–microbe interactions and sustainable crop health.
