The process of ethnic formation in Nicaragua up to the present day was also my theme of investigation, mainly from a cultural perspective. Furthermore, I paid attention to the development process of indigenous movements in Chiapas, southern Mexico. I studied not only their political and social aspects but also their broader cultural practices and their significance. What emerges from these research studies on ethnicity is that the migration of people due to changes in economic backgrounds and working environments has had a significant impact on minorities' sense of self.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFurthermore, I also researched communities of foreign residents in Japan, mainly \"Nikkei\" Peruvians. There, church-centred connections were related to work, life, education and migration. And the various cultural practices that take place there are essential elements for people's identity confirmation and survival. The findings from the research on these transnational migrants provided the background for subsequent research in Japan. From 2019 to 2022, in collaboration with the Toyooka City Hall, we conducted a large-scale study on the lives, education and labour of foreign residents in the region, which I directed the research project as the research representative. The survey revealed a specific picture of foreign residents in a local community with a declining birthrate and an ageing population. In particular, I found that child rearing and education significantly impact the long-term settlement and integration of foreign residents into the community. There I served as chairperson of the Toyooka City Multiculturalism Promotion Committee. The results of this research were published in 2024 as a collection of papers edited by us which has received high acclaims. A follow-up survey is underway on child rearing and education of foreign residents in Kobe. In cooperation with Kobe City Hall and the Board of Education, we conducted interviews at schools where foreign pupils are enrolled. Surveys were also conducted with several organizations that support foreign residents. In this way, I am leading an empirical study on the diversity and problems of foreign residents in Kobe City today and the methods of support needed for the future.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eShoko Hirai\u003c\/strong\u003e is a demographer and sociologist and professor at Kobe University. Her PhD was given in Japanese Studies, The Graduate University for Advanced Studies at Kyoto. Her current project is to elucidate characteristics of Japanese families throughout the past 300 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShe has been conducting family research from a comparative and historical perspective for thirty years; one of current projects is to elucidate characteristics of Japanese families throughout the past 300 years and the other is comparative studies of care and life course in East Asia.
