Shock Wave and High Pressure Phenomena

Advanced Explosion Safety Research in Japan

Insights into Blast Mitigation Technology

Yuta Sugiyama | Tomotaka Homae

Science / Mechanics / General

The book presents an overview of explosion safety research conducted in Japan over the past decades. Combining field and laboratory experiments with numerical simulations, the volume examines blast-wave phenomena, physical hazard assessment, and the scientific foundations of blast mitigation. It also places recent developments within the historical evolution of Japanese explosion safety regulations and technical standards.

The chapters cover the measurement of blast pressure, ground vibration, and fragment hazards, and present studies of underground and subsurface storage magazines. Particular attention is given to blast-wave propagation, blast-structure interaction, and mitigation technologies based on both energy dissipation and energy absorption. Topics include soil barricades, protective walls, cushioning materials, and water-based mitigation approaches, supported by experimental and numerical analyses that provide insight into blast dynamics and mitigation mechanisms.

Bringing together research findings that have contributed to explosion safety practice and regulatory developments in Japan, this book serves as a reference on explosion safety and blast mitigation technology. It is of interest to researchers, graduate students, and engineers working in explosion science, shock and blast phenomena, protective structures, safety engineering, and related fields.

Yuta Sugiyama is a senior research scientist of the Explosion Safety Research Group at the Research Institute of Science for Safety and Sustainability (RISS), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). He received his Doctor of Engineering from Keio University in 2013 and subsequently became a research scientist at AIST. His work focuses on detonation phenomena, physical hazard analysis, and numerical simulations of compressible and multiphase flows.

Tomotaka Homae is a professor at the National Institute of Technology, Toyama College. He received his Ph. D. in Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology (currently Institute of Science Tokyo) in 2001. He was a researcher at the 1st Research Center, the Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI), the Japan Defense Agency (currently the Ministry of Defense), and at RISS, AIST. He has served in the current position since 2009. In these two decade, his work is concerned with the evaluation of effect by explosion, especially mitigation of blast waves.
