Design and Performance of Self-Luminous Cement Pavements
Wentong Wang | Yu Cheng
This work presents a comprehensive solution for developing sustainable, energy-efficient road infrastructure through the innovative use of long-afterglow luminescent materials. Addressing the critical global challenges of nighttime road visibility and high energy consumption, it systematically details the material selection, mix design optimization, and microscopic characterization of self-illuminating cement composites. The book uniquely combines laboratory material science with macroscopic functional evaluations, featuring novel driving simulator studies to assess driver visual comfort and full-scale accelerated loading tests to predict long-term service durability. By revealing the hydration mechanisms and optical decay patterns, it provides actionable strategies for balancing mechanical strength with luminous efficiency in varying environmental conditions. This integrated approach facilitates the creation of "smart" roads that enhance traffic safety while supporting carbon neutrality goals. The book is an essential reference for researchers, graduate students, and pavement engineers in the fields of civil engineering, transportation infrastructure, and functional construction materials.
Dr. Wentong Wang is currently an Associate Professor at the College of Transportation, Shandong University of Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D. degree in Road and Railway Engineering from Chang'an University in 2023. During his doctoral studies, he was a joint Ph.D. researcher at Aalto University, Finland. He currently serves as a member of the Technical Committee of the World Transport Convention. Dr. Wang specializes in the construction and operation of highway transportation infrastructure, with specific expertise in the design and characterization of novel pavement materials (including self-luminous composites), solid waste resource utilization, and intelligent maintenance technologies. He has presided over the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities and participated in several high-level projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program of China and Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He serves as editorial board member or guest editor for more than 10 international academic journals and was a recipient of the Excellent Paper Award at the World Transport Convention.
Dr. Yu Cheng received his B.E. degree in Traffic Engineering from Shandong University of Science and Technology in 2004, his M.E. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from Southeast University in 2006, and his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. Since September 2021, Dr. Cheng has been a Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor at the College of Transportation, Shandong University of Science and Technology. Dr. Cheng focuses on the comprehensive utilization of industrial solid waste, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), and road engineering materials. He has led his team to achieve breakthrough progress in the ecological disposal and engineering utilization of red mud, developing technologies that have been applied in major infrastructure projects such as the Jiqing Expressway and National Highway G309. His research results have been recognized as internationally leading in the field. Dr. Cheng has authorized over 20 national patents and presided over the compilation of 9 standards, including China's first local standard for red mud application in road engineering. In recognition of his significant contributions, he has been selected as a National Leading Talent, a Taishan Industry Leading Talent, a Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and an Expert Enjoying Special Government Allowances of the State Council.
