Dynamics of Railway Vehicle Systems
Gang Shen
This book draws on practical research achievements in railway vehicle engineering, as well as relevant domestic and international textbooks and monographs. It distills a systematic set of basic theories, practical methods, and cutting-edge engineering issues, making it a textbook that integrates foundational knowledge, professionalism, practicality, and advancedness. The book consists of 14 chapters, covering topics such as an overview of vehicle dynamics, fundamentals of dynamics analysis, wheel-rail interaction theory, track structure and irregularities, mathematical models of vehicle systems, stability of vehicle systems, ride quality of vehicle systems, vehicle negotiation of curves, operational safety of railway vehicles, dynamics issues related to traction, braking, adhesion, and axle load transfer, longitudinal dynamics of railway vehicles, flexible-rigid body dynamics of railway vehicles, an overview of coupled dynamics of railway vehicles with track, bridges, overhead lines, and air, and active control of railway vehicles. Vehicle system dynamics is a key area of knowledge for the vehicle discipline, playing an important role in the structural suspension design, dynamics optimization, and wheel-rail interaction management of various types of vehicles. This book may serve as a core textbook for this discipline. It is used for teaching master's and doctoral students and can also be used as a reference book for researchers working in this field.
Shen Gang, Doctor of Engineering, is Professor at the Railway and Urban Rail Transit Research Institute of Tongji University, Shanghai, China. He has long been dedicated to research on railway wheel-rail relationship, vehicle system dynamics, and high-speed maglev control. He has led or participated in numerous national projects and scientific research projects related to speed-up and high-speed train projects. His research areas include dynamic optimization design of vehicles, tread design for standard EMUs (Electric Multiple Units), tread design for trams, innovative suspension design and levitation control strategy research for high-speed maglev trains, development of dynamic simulation software, and development of precision detection systems for wheel-rail profiles. He serves as an editorial board member for several domestic and international professional journals, including Journal of the China Railway Society, Journal of Vibration and Shock, Vehicle System Dynamics and Proceedings of IMech: PartF. He has published over 160 academic papers. He was the first in the world to propose a maglev control method based on flexible beams and developed a simulated levitation test bench to verify the feasibility of this method. His unique single wheelset rolling test bench is functionally rich and structurally streamlined, suitable for teaching and fundamental theoretical research. The high-precision measurement systems for wheel-rail profiles that he developed have reached an internationally advanced level. These include the wheel tread profile measuring instrument, rail wear measuring instrument, rail profile measuring instrument, rail wave wear measuring instrument, wheel out-of-roundness measuring instrument, and wheel out-of-roundness global detection system. These systems have been widely promoted and used in relevant railway companies and research institutions. He has applied for and obtained 10 patents related to high-precision wheel-rail profile detection and analysis systems. He has also successfully developed proprietary professional software packages, including the VTSD Wheel-Rail System Dynamics Software Package, VTSD_simu Locomotive and Vehicle System Dynamics Simulation Library, VSOS Vehicle Suspension Parameter Optimization Software, ZK2/ZK6 Bogie Alignment Testing and Analysis System, Wheel-Rail Profile Design and Analysis System (Wdesign), Wheel-Rail Profile Measurement and Analysis System (WRCAD), and Rail Grinding Profile Design and Evaluation System (RPD).
