Topology Optimization on 2-manifolds for Fluid Problems
An inverse design method for conformal structures on curved surfaces
Yongbo Deng | Jan G. Korvink
This book focuses on topology optimization on 2-manifolds. Theory, numerical implementation and applications have been addressed, with more weight placed on practical applications in fluid problems. This is achieved by providing an in-depth study on several major topics such as topology optimization, differential geometry, finite element method, fluid mechanics and micro/nano-fabrication. Four positioning application cases are studied in detail, which are wettability, surface flow, mass transfer and heat transfer. The comprehensive and systematic treatment of practical issues in topology optimization on 2-manifolds is one of the major features of the book, which is particularly suited for readers who are interested to learn practical solutions in topology optimization of structural patterns on curved surfaces. This book benefits researchers, engineers, and graduate students in the fields of structural optimization, mechanical engineering, fluid mechanics, micro/nano-technology, etc.
Prof. Dr. Yongbo Deng is a permanent group leader at the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. He received his Ph.D. in 2012 from the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China. From 2012 to 2024, he held successive positions as an assistant professor, associate professor, and a full professor at CIOMP-CAS, China. During 2014–2015, he worked at IMTEK, University of Freiburg in Germany, on research collaboration in electromagnetic topology optimization. From 2016 to 2017, he was at KIT-IMT supported by a Guest Professor Fellowship. In 2018, he was awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in Germany. During 2018–2020, he worked at KIT-IMT as a Senior Humboldt Fellow (Experienced Researcher). His research focuses on topology optimization of micro/nano-structures with applications in microfluidics, nano-optics, and superconductors.
Prof. Dr. Jan G. Korvink is a mechanical engineer and micro technologist with a keen interest in magnetic resonance. His research focuses on increasing the resolution of nuclear magnetic resonance for applications requiring challengingly small samples such as cells, or small organisms. His research work lies on the convergence of MEMS technology, including 3D nano-printed microfluidics, electrical detection of nuclear and electron paramagnetic resonance, and their application in the life sciences, for example for drug screening, and disease diagnosis. He is the co-recent recipient of the ERC-funded Synergy Grant “HiSCORE,” and the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre “HyPERiON.” He has (co-)written more than 325 journal publications, and numerous technical and scientific books.
