This volume examines the multifaceted dimensions of gender inequalities in the less liberalized societies of South Asia by presenting interdisciplinary views of the social frameworks that shape the inherent bias towards women. Despite political and geographic diversity, shared socio-economic and cultural frameworks across South Asian countries sustain systemic gender injustices. Rooted in traditional norms, these societies perpetuate resource inequities, labour market disparities, and structural discrimination. The volume offers well researched perspectives on how patriarchy engenders social barriers to women’s mobility, agency, safety and personal freedom. It also highlights the subservient position of women in workplace and their economic vulnerabilities in rural, urban and informal sectors, all inhibiting their road to empowerment. Drawing on conceptual, qualitative, and quantitative research from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan, the volume offers critical insights into gendered social structures and workplace inequalities. It serves as a valuable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and policymakers in understanding the gender complexities and initiating further discussions towards achieving SDG 5 (Gender equality) in the South Asian countries.

Ujjaini Mukhopadhyay is the Principal of East Calcutta Girls’ College, Kolkata, India. She has also served as visiting faculty in the Post-Graduation Departments of University of Calcutta and Prafulla Chandra College, Kolkata. She has a Ph.D in Economics from University of Calcutta. She was awarded National Scholarship and UGC-NET Research Fellowship, India. She has co-authored two books, Revisiting the Informal Sector: A General Equilibrium Approach and Foreign Direct Investment in Developing Countries: A Theoretical Evaluation, both published from Springer. She has edited the book Internal Migration Within South Asia. Contemporary Issues and Challenges (Springer, 2022). She has published more than 60 articles in reputed journals and presented papers at national and international conferences. She received the Emerald Literati Award from Emerald Publishing, UK. She is a regular reviewer of academic papers in journals published by Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, Routledge, etc. She has also served as Review Editor and Handling Editor of reputed journals and has contributed in newspapers and television shows as economics expert.

Anwesha Haldar is serving as the Assistant Professor and Head of the Undergraduate and Post Graduate Department of Geography at East Calcutta Girls' College, Kolkata. She has completed her Ph. D. with UGC-NET JRF/SRF scholarship in Geography from the University of Calcutta. She has taught Geography at the Post-graduate levels in various institutions under the University of Calcutta, West Bengal State University, Vidyasagar University, and Rabindra Bharati University. She has presented and published several research papers in reputed national and international journals, in the fields of climatic and urban geomorphology, environmental sciences, and social and gender geography. She has also co-edited four books in different aspects of geography, of which two are edited volumes from Springer. Presently, she is the Managing Editor of the Indian Journal of Landscape Systems and Ecological Studies.
