The Trend of Internationalisation
Brian C. H. Fong | James Lee | Thomas Lynch
Global Taiwan Security Report is a regular report series that tracks emerging scholarly and policy debates on Taiwan’s security. The inaugural volume, Global Taiwan Security Report 2026, provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of the recent trend towards the internationalisation of Taiwan’s security.
Today, Taiwan stands at the centre of global geopolitics. The island lies at the intersection of four dimensions of US–China strategic competition: military competition over control of the first island chain; techno-economic competition over advanced AI-semiconductor supply chains; ideological competition between Chinese nationalism and Western democracy promotion; and world-order competition between an absolutist sovereignty-first vision and a rules-based international order. For better or worse, Taiwan’s security matters not only to its 23 million people but also to everyone who values global peace, prosperity, and democracy.
Featuring contributions by leading scholars from Taiwan and beyond, Global Taiwan Security Report 2026 provides the most up-to-date analysis of why and how Taiwan’s security is embedded in global reordering, alliance politics, defence strategy, technology supply chains, and maritime governance. This book will serve as an essential reference for scholars and students in Taiwan Studies, China Studies, and International Relations worldwide. It will also appeal to policymakers and practitioners worldwide who seek to understand the evolving dynamics of Taiwan’s security and the associated geopolitical risks.
