Tracing the Voices of the Indian Diaspora in Vietnamese Literature, Culture, and Society
Chi P. Pham | Jose Monfred C. Sy | Đỗ Thị Hường
Tracing the Voices of the Indian Diaspora in Vietnamese Literature, Culture, and Society offers a fresh and necessary account of a little-studied community in modern Vietnam. Moving beyond familiar narratives of nation-building, the book brings together archival records, literature, newspapers, films, and interviews to recover the partial, fragmented, and often unheard voices of Indian descendants in Vietnam. It shows how Indian diasporic lives have been shaped by colonial mobility, Vietnamese nationalism, local belonging, religious practice, memory, silence, and everyday negotiation. Rather than treating the Indian community as marginal or merely symbolic, the book reveals its active presence in Vietnam’s cultural and social history. Through its interdisciplinary and comparative approach, this volume invites readers to rethink national history, diaspora, minority agency, and the ethics of listening to voices that have long remained at the edges of official narratives.
