It will extend across a diverse set of topic areas related to environmental sustainability and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each chapter will chart progress within Malaysia, framed within a discussion of the targets the country has set for itself and the progress made in achieving these. The chapters will detail important patterns and trends in the country and compare progress in Malaysia with other Southeast Asian countries facing similar challenges. Each chapter will showcase successes, highlighting what Malaysia is doing well, and discuss where we are falling short of relevant targets and aspirations. Each will draw attention to any particular circumstances or constraints in Malaysia that have affected progress. In closing, chapters will provide recommendations designed to improve progress in meeting sustainability targets. The book is divided into these main sections: (1) Biodiversity and Conservation; (2) Sustainable Cities; (3) Energy, Food and Waste; (4) Climate Resilience; (5) Green business, manufacturing and Corporate Social Responsibility; (6) Stakeholders and Education. The book caters to academics and practitioners working in the fields of sustainability, natural resources management, and biodiversity conservation. It aims to synthesize expert knowledge and package; this is a way that the book represents both a critique of progress to date and a statement of what needs to change. In this way, the book will be usable as a source of reference and as the evidence base needed to alter policy and action.

Christopher Gibbins is a freshwater ecologist.
