Mental Health Systems and Policy in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Mental Health in Bangladesh
S. M. Yasir Arafat
This book presents a comprehensive and up-to-date examination of mental health, mental disorders, and mental health services in one of the world's most densely populated and rapidly developing countries. As Bangladesh undergoes epidemiological and social transitions, mental disorders have emerged as a major component of the country's growing burden of non-communicable diseases. Despite increasing recognition of their impact on individuals, families, and communities, significant challenges remain, including treatment gaps, stigma, limited mental health literacy, workforce shortages, inadequate funding, and barriers to access to care.
Drawing on contemporary evidence and the expertise of leading scholars and clinicians, this volume examines key issues in psychiatry, psychology, mental health policy, and community mental health services in Bangladesh. The second edition expands coverage to include social psychiatry, reproductive psychiatry, eating disorders, and disaster psychiatry, while substantially updating chapters on forensic psychiatry, suicidal behaviour, geriatric psychiatry, substance use disorders, and mental health research.
By integrating clinical, social, cultural, and public health perspectives, the book offers valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges shaping mental health care in Bangladesh. It will be an essential resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, public health professionals, social scientists, policymakers, researchers, and postgraduate students interested in global mental health, South Asian mental health systems, and community-based mental health care.
