It explains gas barrier theory and international standards, then delves into PLA’s structural properties and how they affect packaging performance. The book examines the relationship between PLA’s crystallinity and its gas barrier capabilities, including applications in beverage containers. It also discusses how surface treatments and composites influence these properties. Finally, it evaluates PLA’s chemical resistance and suitability for packaging based on its interaction with liquids and solvents.

With this one book, readers will learn everything they need to know about using poly(lactic acid) as a packaging material.

Dr. Shuichi Sato is a professor of functional materials and packaging science at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tokyo Denki University, Tokyo, Japan, and a Visiting Professor at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
