Atlas of Radiological Mimickers, Variations, and Pseudolesions, Volume 1
Toshihide Yamaoka | Namiko Noguchi
The first volume provides a comprehensive and visually intuitive atlas of anatomical normal variants, radiological mimickers, pseudolesions, and artifacts encountered throughout the body. Covering regions from the brain and head and neck to the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, spine, and extremities, it presents variants primarily demonstrated on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) volume-rendered computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Designed for radiologists, surgeons, anatomists, and embryology researchers, the volume helps distinguish normal anatomical variations from pathological conditions, reducing diagnostic pitfalls, unnecessary investigations, and inappropriate interventions. It also provides valuable support for image interpretation, interventional procedures, and surgical planning.
Featuring thousands of high-quality color images and 3D renderings, the atlas illustrates both common and uncommon anatomical variants, as well as "don't touch" lesions and artifacts that may simulate disease. The use of color-coded three-dimensional reconstructions enhances anatomical understanding beyond traditional grayscale atlases, making this volume an indispensable reference for clinical practice, education, and research.
Toshihide Yamaoka, MD, PhD, has been the Director of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology at Kyoto Katsura Hospital for over 10 years. He graduated from Kyoto University and completed his radiology residency at Kyoto City Hospital. Dr. Yamaoka has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to five book chapters. He has extensive experience reviewing and publishing manuscripts and books on thoracic congenital vascular anomalies and normal variants involving the portal vein, umbilical artery, and ligamentum teres, with over 20 years of clinical practice in interventional radiology and experience with numerous cases where normal variants affected clinical decisions. Since the year he joined Katsura Hospital, he has mentored more than 100 junior residents. It is noteworthy that the summary notes of the morning conferences with the residents have been presented as a review article in the Japanese Journal of Radiology. He has also been awarded honors, including the Cum Laude and Certificate of Merit at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the Magna Cum Laude at the European Congress of Radiology. He is a full member of Sigma Xi and active in professional societies such as the RSNA and the Japanese College of Radiology.
