Science / Life Sciences / Ecology

This edited book aims to explore various facets of the restoration of urban green spaces, examining both the theoretical frameworks and practical approaches that contribute to their conservation and enhancement. By bringing together contributions from researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community stakeholders, the book intends to provide a comprehensive overview of current practices, challenges, innovations, and future directions in urban green space restoration.

Urbanization is rapidly transforming landscapes worldwide, leading to the depletion of natural green spaces within cities. The consequence of this trend includes ecological degradation, compromised biodiversity, and diminished quality of life for urban residents. However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of restoring and enhancing urban green spaces to mitigate these impacts and promote sustainable urban development.

This book targets academics, researchers, urban planners, landscape architects, environmental consultants, policymakers, and community activists interested in sustainable urban development, environmental conservation, and landscape restoration. It aims to serve as a valuable resource for professionals working in fields related to urban green spaces and as a reference for students and scholars exploring these topics.

P. K. Joshi is Professor School of Environmental Sciences (SES) and Former Chairperson Special Centre for Disaster Research (SCDR), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. His research is focused on environmental studies, with specialization in landscape characterization and climate change analysis. He has immensely contributed in understanding geosphere and biosphere interactions. His present research work contributes to assessing impact and vulnerability of climate change, and disaster risk reduction. He has spent close to three decades in actively contributing to a wide range of training, research and academic programmes in the field of geospatial analysis. He possesses a scholastic record coupled with strong leadership skills and networking capabilities. He has made significant contribution as a ‘Scientific Administrator’, and in promoting ‘Scientific Research’ inter-alia through education, research publications and outreach activities.

Sachchidanand Tripathi is Professor at the Department of Botany, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, University of Delhi, Delhi. He obtained a doctoral degree from the Department of Botany, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), India. His academic and research interests encompass plant ecology, soil ecology, ecophysiology, and urban ecology, with a focus on understanding plant-environment interactions across diverse ecosystems. He has contributed extensively to the field through more than 60 publications (including research articles, books, book chapters, and conference proceedings) with journals and publishers of international repute. He is serving as an Editorial Board member of several reputed international journals. His scholarly contributions reflect a multidisciplinary approach to ecological research and environmental studies.

Rahul Bhadouria is an assistant professor at the Department of Environmental Studies, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, University of Delhi, Delhi, India. He obtained his doctorate in Environmental Science from the Department of Botany, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. His research interests include plant ecology, soil ecology, ecophysiology, and urban ecology. He has published more than 30 research papers, 35 book chapters, and 18 edited books with internationally reputed journals and publishers. His current research focuses on soil carbon dynamics to mitigate climate change, tree seedling survival and growth in tropical dry forests, plant community assembly, functional diversity, and soil attributes across forest-savanna-grassland ecosystems in India. His works also includes recovery of degraded mountains in the central Himalaya, and urban ecology. He serves as an Editorial Board member of several reputed international journals.

Rishikesh Singh is an Assistant Professor at Amity School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Amity University Punjab, Mohali, India. He has obtained his PhD from the Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development (IESD), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, India and completed a Post-doctoral fellowship (NPDF) at the Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. His research interests include ecology and environmental science, including vegetation analysis, tree seedling ecology, invasion ecology, urban ecology, soil carbon dynamics, land use change and biochar technology. He has investigated ecological processes across diverse tropical ecosystems, including dry deciduous forests, savannas, riparian landscapes, urban ecosystems, and agroecosystems. His major scientific contribution is in ‘Biochar and Agro-ecology’. He is a recipient of the Young Scientist Award from the National Environmental Science Academy (NESA), New Delhi and has publishing over 90 Scopus-indexed publications with reputed international journals, and publishers.
