Core-Shell Nanoparticles for Targeted Drug Delivery
Volume 1: Design Principles and Mechanistic Studies in Stimuli-Responsive Precision Therapeutics
Raj Kumar | Ajeet Kaushik | Yogendra Kumar Mishra
The book presents a detailed overview of core-shell nanoparticles for stimuli-responsive drug delivery, combining fundamental principles with recent innovations. It explains how these nanostructures are designed to respond to diverse triggers like pH, temperature, enzymes, redox, magnetic fields, and light, enabling precise therapeutic release. By integrating design, synthesis, and characterization, the volume highlights their role in advancing smart nanocarriers.
The background lies in the limitations of conventional therapies, which often suffer from poor bioavailability, systemic toxicity, and lack of site-specific action. Core-shell nanoparticles overcome these challenges by enhancing encapsulation, stability, and targeted release. Their multifunctionality and biocompatibility make them promising for cancer, infections, inflammation, and neurological disorders, aligning with the broader evolution of nanomedicine and biomaterials research.
Chapters are organized into five parts: fundamentals of nanoparticle design and functionalization; material-based systems such as polymeric, silica, metallic, lipid, and DNA/peptide carriers; stimuli-responsive mechanisms; biocompatibility, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics; and translation toward commercialization. Each section blends theoretical insights with application-oriented perspectives, supported by contributions from international experts in nanotechnology, pharmaceutics, and biomedical engineering.
The audience includes researchers, pharmaceutical scientists, clinicians, and graduate students across disciplines such as nanotechnology, pharmaceutics, biotechnology, materials science, and biomedical engineering. Apart from this healthcare professionals, industry specialists, and regulatory policymakers will also benefit from its practical insights on safety, efficacy, and clinical translation.
