Mechanics of Solids Volume II

P. C. Dumir | B. P. Patel | Atul Bhaskar

Science / Mechanics / Solids

Mechanics of Solids, Volume II, builds on the foundations of Volume I to offer a unified, advanced treatment of strength of materials and theory of elasticity. This volume develops each topic through the fundamental equations of 3D linear elasticity, followed by engineering formulations, clearly outlining their assumptions, applicability, and limitations. Covering axisymmetric loading, torsion with warping, plane stress and plane strain, stress concentration, stress intensity, 3D potential solutions, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, anisotropic elasticity, and wave propagation, the book provides rigorous, yet concise explanations supported by practical examples and thoughtfully designed problems. Catering to senior undergraduate students, graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers, this volume serves as an essential resource for deepening understanding of advanced solid mechanics and for bridging the gap between engineering theory and elasticity-based formulations.

P. C. Dumir is a retired Professor of applied mechanics at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He received his B.Tech. (Gold Medallist) in mechanical engineering from Panjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, M.Tech. in machine design from IIT Kharagpur, and Ph.D. from IIT Delhi. Over a distinguished career spanning 38 years at IIT Delhi, with a research stint at the University of California, Berkeley, he made significant contributions to solid mechanics, publishing more than 100 papers in international journals. He has authored two textbooks: Engineering Mechanics and Mechanics of Solids, Volume I.

B. P. Patel is a Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He holds a B.E. in mechanical engineering (Govt. Engineering College, Rewa), an M.Tech. in design engineering from IIT Bombay, and a Ph.D. from MNNIT Allahabad. Before joining IIT Delhi in 2004, he served for ten years at the Institute of Armament Technology, DRDO, Pune. His research spans solid mechanics, structural modeling, and nonlinear analysis, with over 110 international journal papers, 27 national journal papers, and 100+ conference publications. He is a recipient of the INAE Young Engineer Award (2001) and serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Damage Mechanics.

Atul Bhaskar is Professor of applied mechanics at the University of Southampton in the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. He earned his B.Tech. in mechanical engineering from IIT Kanpur, M.Tech. in applied mechanics from IIT Delhi, and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. His academic and research career spans multiple institutions across mechanical, aerospace, civil, acoustical, and ship science engineering, complemented by contributions to curriculum development, accreditation panels, and external examinations. Dr. Bhaskar’s research contributions include over 150 publications, four patents, and major projects supported by research councils, industry, and international collaborations. He is a recipient of the Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the George Stephenson Medal (IMechE) for outstanding research.
