Biomedical Materials for Multi-functional Applications

Handbook of Artificial Tissues, Biofabrication and Bioprinting, Volume II

Arnab Chanda | Dishant Sharma

Technology & Engineering / Biomedical

This book introduces the principles, materials, methods, and applications of biofabrication and bioprinting for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. It examines the design, fabrication, and functionalization of biological constructs using advanced manufacturing techniques, with emphasis on the interactions between cells, biomaterials, scaffold architecture, and fabrication processes.

The book covers biofabrication techniques, tissue engineering fundamentals, computational design and modelling of scaffolds, extrusion-based bioprinting, cell-laden bioinks, hydrogels, polymers, multi-material printing, and mechanical and biological characterization. Applications include three-dimensional models of orthopaedic, skin, muscle, and tumour tissues, organs-on-a-chip, wound healing, surgical simulation, and implantable devices.

Further topics include vascularization, biocompatibility, scalability, clinical translation, and regulatory considerations, as well as emerging areas such as 4D bioprinting, smart materials, and sensor-integrated bioengineered constructs. The book also considers the economic and environmental aspects of biofabrication.

The book is intended for graduate students, researchers, and professionals working in biofabrication, bioprinting, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, biomedical engineering, and biomaterials science.
