Science / Environmental Science

This book examines how diverse identities, perspectives, and lived experiences can be meaningfully integrated into crisis management and resilience-building efforts. The studies included in this book challenge the notion of communities being homogeneous, highlighting the unique needs and contributions of marginalized, minority, and underrepresented groups. By doing so, this book explores alternatives for inclusive, equitable, and effective approaches to crisis prevention and post-crisis recovery. It covers various case studies, interdisciplinary methodologies, and diverse epistemological perspectives. The inclusion and diversity ethos in this book also reflects the various origins of contributors to the book, which covers Oceania, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Additionally, this book compiles chapters from academics and practitioners that enrich the perspectives and approaches for understanding and analyzing inclusion and diversity in addressing various humanitarian emergencies, for example, disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation through strategic planning, and displacement and integration of migrants and refugees in different social contexts. Whether focusing on the short, medium, and long term or through preventive practices or response, recovery, and even long-term development, the central vision of the book is to ensure that no one is left behind. The book generates new insights and practical pathways for policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and communities to foster truly resilient societies.

This book addresses the gap in inclusive approaches and perspectives within diverse humanitarian crises management and their policies, initiatives, and project evaluations by exploring how meaningful inclusion and recognition of diversity can strengthen crisis prevention, recovery, and resilience-building.
