The Jixia Academy: Its History and Intellectual Legacy
Zhiming Wang
This book offers a focused exploration of the Jixia Academy, a pivotal institution in early Chinese intellectual history. Once a vibrant center for the “Contention of a Hundred Schools of Thought,” Jixia fostered open philosophical debate and embodied the spirit of academic freedom—an ideal that later dynasties often suppressed. Although long overshadowed by the rise of Confucian orthodoxy, Jixia’s legacy remains a vital part of China’s cultural heritage.
Featuring twelve lectures by leading Chinese scholars, this volume brings together new interpretations and research drawn from a public course series on traditional Chinese culture. It aims to reintroduce the significance of Jixia thought to modern readers—scholars, policymakers, and general audiences alike—and to rekindle appreciation for this intellectual tradition. By doing so, it encourages renewed interest in the diversity and dynamism that once defined early Chinese philosophical life.
