Wei Yang

Wei Yang was born in 1954 in Beijing, China. He received his PhD degree from Brown University, USA, in 1985, majored in Solid and Structural Mechanics. His current areas of expertise include Solid Mechanics, X-Mechanics, and Aero-Astro Structures.

Wei Yang has been a full professor since 1989. In the academic fields centred at Mechanics, he has authored and co-authored 11 books and over 300 technical papers in internationally refereed journals, and those works have been cited 11000+ times in SCIE. He was the Head of Academic Committee of Tsinghua University (2003-2006). He was the President of Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (2015-2019), and a Bureau Member of IUTAM (2012-2016). He is a Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Head of Technological Science, a Fellow and the Treasurer of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and a Foreign Member of National Academy of Engineering (USA). As the first recipient, he received twice (1995, 2005) the National Natural Science Awards of China. He also received the Eric Reissner Medal from Society of Engineering Science in 2011, the Calvin Rice Lectural Award in 2012 from ASME, and Warner T. Koiter Medal in 2017 from ASME. He was credited by Honorary Doctor degrees from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Engineering, 2011), Brown University (Science, 2012), University of Bristol (Law, 2013), Northwest University (Engineering, 2017), and Aristotle University (Engineering, 2017). He also serves as an Advisor of Springer-Nature, and the Chair of the China Academic Committee of Elsevier.

Huajian Gao

Professor Huajian Gao received his B.S. degree from Xi‘an Jiaotong University in 1982, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Science from Harvard University in 1984 and 1988, respectively. He served on the faculty of Stanford University between 1988 and 2002, where he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1994 and to Full Professor in 2000. He served as Director at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research between 2001 and 2006, and then as Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Engineering at Brown University from 2006-2019. He was a Distinguished University Professor at Nanyang Technological University and Scientific Director of the Institute of High Performance Computing in Singapore. Currently, he is a Professor at the Mechano-X Institute, Tsinghua University.

Prof. Gao’s research has been focused on the understanding of basic principles that control mechanical properties and behaviors of materials in both engineering and biological systems. Gao is the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, the flagship journal of Solid Mechanics (that covers the most important works of Fracture Mechanics. He has been elected to memberships in US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, German National Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea. He has also received numerous awards and honors, including the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rodney Hill Prize in Solid Mechanics from the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the William Prager Medal from Society of Engineering Science, the Nadai Medal from American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Theodor von Karman Medal from American Society of Civil Engineers.

Xi-Qiao Feng

Prof. Xi-Qiao Feng is a Yangtze Chair Professor in the Department of Engineering Mechanics of Tsinghua University. He received B.E., Engineering Mechanics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 1990, M.S., Solid Mechanics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 1991, and Ph.D., Solid Mechanics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 1995. He served as Post-doctoral fellow and Associate Professor at Institute of Nuclear Energy and Technology, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 1995-1997, an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation-awarded research fellow, Institute of Mechanics, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, 1997-1998, and an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation-awarded Europe Research Fellow, Koiter Institute Delft, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, 1999. He became an Associate Professor, Department of Engineering Mechanics, Tsinghua University, 1999-2001, and a full Professor, Department of Engineering Mechanics, Tsinghua University since 2001. Professor Feng's research group is currently studying the mechanics of biological materials, with the aims to understand their structure-composition-property-function relationships at different length scales and to search for inspirations from the splendid living world in order to solve various challenging problems of technologically importance. This group has been paying increasing attention to the mechanics of cells, in particular to their complicated and adaptive responses to various interactions with the environment. In addition, he is also interested in micromechanics and nanomechanics, especially some multidisciplinary phenomena observed in micro/nano-sized materials and devices. Prof. Feng serves as one of the three editors of Engineering Fracture Mechanics.
