Diagnostic Teaching in Special Education and Early Childhood

Myung-Sook Koh

Education / Schools / Levels / Early Childhood

Educators are expected to teach students with varied language, literacy, and communication skills but lack a cohesive developmental roadmap that shows how these abilities follow a unified progression. This book responds to this need by introducing the Unified Language–Literacy–Communication Development Continuum (UDC–Language Triad), a comprehensive, developmentally sequenced framework that guides educators through each stage of development-from oral-motor readiness and auditory processing to advanced comprehension, narrative construction, and independent story generation. Drawing from developmental science, educational psychology, and inclusive pedagogy, the UDC–Language Triad framework integrates receptive and expressive language development with literacy instruction to support all learners-regardless of their diverse cognitive, linguistic, or social profiles.

Designed with particular consideration for young children and learners with autism spectrum disorders, for whom language acquisition and social interaction present significant challenges, the UDC–Language Triad offers systematic guidance through sequenced instruction, diagnostic teaching tools, and developmental checklists across four levels-emergent, developmental, progressive, and advanced. While clearly structured, the framework remains flexible, allowing educators to adapt instruction to individual learner profiles. This integration equips educators to support developmentally aligned growth across the three domains of language, literacy, and communication.

Each chapter includes practical tools such as observation checklists, scaffolded activities, and multisensory tasks, making the framework both accessible and actionable.
