King Sunny Adé’s Juju Music
Dami Ajayi | Michael E. Veal
Juju Music, an anthology of seven idiom-rich and proverb-laden songs set to danceable polyrhythmic percussion, was a portal into the Yoruba worldview.
The album Juju Music introduced the West African musical genre and its most dynamic practitioner, King Sunny Adé, to the world. Juju Music was the first in a series of sonic experiments with the genre, helmed by French producer Martin Meissonier. His aim was to elevate Juju to global status like Reggae, and Juju's foremost star King Sunny Adé to superstardom, like Bob Marley.
This book explores the birth and emergence of the genre, its complex history from its minstrel origins to becoming a sophisticated modern sound in 1970s Nigeria, to going global in the 80s. It considers the legacy of Juju music today, its role contemporary Yoruba life, and its diverse influences within contemporary African and Afrodiasporic music genres.
