Dinah Lee's 1964 debut album, Introducing Dinah Lee, consolidated her status as a true Australasian musical star. Following a string of successful singles both in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia, including “Reet Petite” and “Do the Blue Beat,” Viking released her first full-length album. Dinah, known for her forward-thinking fashion sense and unique image became known as “Queen of the Mods,” and soon became one of Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia's most successful popular musicians of the 1960s. Behind this success, Dinah was a hardworking and driven musician who maintained a relentless international performance career in person and on television. She collaborated with other influential musicians at the time, both locally, such as Max Merritt and the Meteors, and internationally, including with Jamaica's Millie Small. This book explores Dinah's debut album and contextualizes her early career as a fundamental part of Australasia's emerging local popular music scene of the early 1960s.

Using original ethnographic interviews with Dinah Lee conducted in 2023 and pulling from Dinah Lee's collections at the Alexander Turnbull Library at the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa in Wellington, this is the first scholarly book on Aotearoa New Zealand's first international pop star.
