Reimagining Feminist Curation through the Artistic Practices of Contemporary Women Artists
Ann Rowson Love | Deborah Randolph
Celebrating the work of women artists, this book suggests ways in which qualitative research and artistic practice can improve curation and museum education.
This book will explore the questions, "In what ways does a close examination of artistic practice inform feminist curation?" and “How does a phenomenological lens and methodology shape the understanding of artistic practice and, in turn, influence exhibition development?"
The research conducted for this book is an examination of and collaboration with five female contemporary artists. Across three parts, the book explores topics spanning artistic practice, qualitative research, feminist theory and approaches, and feminist curation; examines the lifeworld of five female artists and their artistic practices based on the authors' immersive studio visits; and investigates the implications of women's artistic practice on exhibition development. Additionally, this book provides practical steps through the exhibition development of the featured artists to help inform curatorial practice based on the authors' framework of feminist curation. Contemporary curators are invited into the conversation about the framework to help authenticate its components. Interspersed among the chapters are Interludes, which provide insights by artists on care, curation, mentorship and activism.
