Sensing the World with Python and MicroPython

Charles Bell

Computers / Hardware / General

Build modern sensor networks using Python, MicroPython, XBee modules, and the latest Raspberry Pi boards. This fully revised 3rd Edition updates every project, example, and workflow, and shows you how to integrate today’s hardware while using your Raspberry Pi as a MySQL 9 database server to store and manage sensor data.

You’ll explore current sensor technologies and learn how to create sensor nodes with XBee, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino, now updated with new boards, code, and tools. The book walks you through collecting data from multiple nodes, storing it locally or remotely, and using Connector/Python to connect your Raspberry Pi directly to MySQL 9. You’ll also build a fully implemented, multi‑node home‑environment monitoring system with expanded hardware, additional sensors, and complete setup, coding, and testing instructions.

If you want to see how today’s XBee modules, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino boards work together to form a robust sensor network, Beginning Sensor Networks, 3rd Edition is the practical, hands‑on guide you need.

What You'll Learn

  • Build and program sensor nodes with modern Python and MicroPython
  • Work with current XBee modules and updated Raspberry Pi boards
  • Host and manage sensor data on a Raspberry Pi running MySQL 9
  • Use Connector/Python for reliable, up‑to‑date database integration
  • Create complete, scalable sensor networks with fully implemented projects

Who This Book Is For

Anyone interested in building or experimenting with sensor networks or IoT projects, including beginners with little programming experience, and readers who want to use modern XBee, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino hardware together with Python‑based tools.

Charles Bell conducts research in emerging technologies. He is a former member of the Oracle MySQL Development team and is the team lead for the MySQL Utilities team. He lives in a small town in rural Virginia with his loving wife. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005 and a Doctor of Ministry in 2025. Dr. Bell is an expert in the database field and has extensive knowledge and experience in software development and systems engineering. His research interests include 3D printers, microcontrollers, three-dimensional printing, database systems, software engineering, and sensor networks. He spends his limited free time as a practicing Maker focusing on microcontroller projects and refinement of three-dimensional printers.
