Designing from the Inside Out

How Design Practices Shape Culture, Creativity, and Innovation

Lun Cheak Tan

Computers / Human-Computer Interaction

Innovation is not a process problem. It is a culture problem. Organizations invest billions in innovation, yet many still struggle to turn ideas into meaningful and lasting change. The challenge is rarely a lack of talent, strategy, technology, or process. More often, innovation falters because the values and behaviors needed to sustain creativity never take root.

As design gains influence in organizations, designers are increasingly invited into conversations about innovation, transformation, and strategy. Yet many still see their role primarily through the lens of solving problems and creating solutions. What if design's greatest contribution extends beyond what it creates to the cultures it helps shape? Most designers focus on the people they design for. Few realize their greatest influence may be on the people they design with. Perhaps the most meaningful things we design are not always the products we leave behind, but the cultures we help bring to life

Through stories, observations, and practical insights Designing from the Inside Out explores how designers can become catalysts of creativity, collaboration, and change. It offers a new perspective on how values shape culture, how culture shapes innovation, and how designers can help create the conditions where new ideas thrive.

What You Will Learn

  • Identify the cultural barriers that quietly suppress creativity and innovation
  • Apply design values to strengthen trust, collaboration, and creative resilience
  • Use design practices to translate values into behaviors that shape culture and innovation.
  • Expand the role of design beyond problem-solving by cultivating the values, behaviors, and relationships that enable innovation.
  • Build and sustain a human-centered culture where creativity and innovation can thrive.
