Building Enterprise Payment Systems
Designing Reliable Transactions, APIs, and Operational Workflows
Aditya Vilas Deshpande
Payment processing looks simple from the outside: a client submits an amount, a service returns a status, and money appears to move. Inside an enterprise platform, however, every payment traverses business rules, databases, fraud and risk checks, processor integrations, asynchronous events, operational queues, and human workflows. A timeout can leave the final outcome uncertain, a retry can create duplicate charges, and a successful authorization may later require refunds, reversals, reconciliation, disputes, or chargeback processing. These are not edge cases—they are the core engineering challenges of building enterprise payment systems.
This book is a practical guide to designing and implementing transaction-intensive payment platforms that remain accurate, secure, traceable, and resilient under real-world conditions. Using a fictional payment platform, NovaPay, as a continuous case study, readers progressively build payment APIs, transaction state models, processor adapters, durable idempotency, asynchronous event-driven workflows, reconciliation services, monitoring capabilities, refund and dispute processes, and production-ready operational controls. Along the way, the book demonstrates proven enterprise patterns including domain-driven design, microservices, transactional outbox, sagas, event-driven integration, observability, concurrency control, and failure recovery. Unlike books that either explain payment ecosystems at a high level or teach generic Spring Boot microservices, this book focuses on the engineering realities of building reliable payment platforms where correctness, auditability, and operational resilience are paramount, equipping developers and architects with the skills to build payment systems that can be trusted in production.
You Will:
- Design and implement enterprise payment platforms using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and event-driven architecture.
- Build resilient payment workflows with idempotency, distributed transactions, reconciliation, refunds, disputes, and chargeback handling.
- Apply enterprise reliability patterns including transactional outbox, sagas, observability, concurrency control, and failure recovery.
This book is for: Java developers, Spring Boot developers, software architects and payment platform engineers
Aditya Deshpande is a Senior Software Engineer at PayPal with more than eight years of experience building and supporting enterprise applications. His work spans digital payments, transaction monitoring, chargeback processing, fraud and mismatch identification, RESTful services, microservice integration, performance engineering, and critical production support. He has developed backend systems with Java, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Hibernate, relational and NoSQL databases, and has also contributed to React and JavaScript applications. Earlier in his career, he engineered service-management and workflow products using Java, Drools, multithreading, BPMN-oriented user interfaces, and Jenkins-based continuous integration. Aditya holds a Master of Science in Management Information Systems from Texas A&M University and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunication. He is a certified Professional Scrum Master and Professional Product Owner. His combination of hands-on payment-platform experience and broad enterprise-software engineering makes him well positioned to explain how reliable transaction systems are designed, implemented, tested, and operated.
