Problems and Solutions in Medical Physics
Diagnostic Imaging
Kwan Hoong Ng | Jeannie Hsiu Ding Wong | Geoffrey Clarke
This volume serves as a study guide and revision resource for postgraduate students preparing for examinations in diagnostic imaging. The problems and solutions presented reflect the typical syllabi adopted by universities and training programmes worldwide. This invaluable study guide should be used in conjunction with other key textbooks in the field to provide additional learning opportunities.
Since the publication of the first edition, diagnostic imaging has continued to advance rapidly, with significant developments in computed tomography, artificial intelligence and radiomics. In response to these developments, the second edition has been carefully reviewed and updated. Existing problems have been refined, solutions have been strengthened and expanded where appropriate, and selected content has been revised to better reflect current clinical practice and evolving standards.
One hundred and sixty-two solved problems are presented across ten chapters covering core topics, including X-Ray Production, Digital Radiography, Image Quality, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Radiation Protection, Radiobiology, Artificial Intelligence and Radiomics. The problems are designed to illustrate and augment the underlying theory, while reinforcing fundamental principles to enhance learning and information retention.
This book forms part of a four-volume set of medical physics problems and solutions. The companion volumes address radiotherapy physics, nuclear medicine physics and radiation protection.
Features:
- Consolidates concepts and assists in the understanding and applications of theoretical concepts in medical physics
- Suitable as a revision tool for postgraduate students sitting medical physics, radiation oncology and radiology science examinations
- Each chapter provides examples, notes and references for further reading to enhance understanding.
Kwan Hoong Ng, PhD, DABMP, FIUPESM, is an Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, and a Fellow of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP). Trained in medical physics at the University of Aberdeen, UK and Universiti Malaya, he has devoted his career to advancing the responsible, humane and safe use of medical imaging technologies in healthcare.
His work reflects a sustained commitment to scientific excellence in the service of patient safety, professional integrity and capacity building. In recognition of his global contributions to the field, Professor Ng was named one of the world’s top 50 medical physicists by the IOMP in 2013 and received the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Award in 2018. His scholarly output includes over 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 40 book chapters and 15 books as author, co-author or editor. He has also delivered more than 500 scientific presentations and over 350 invited lectures worldwide.
Beyond scholarship, Professor Ng has been deeply engaged in mentoring, education and professional formation. He has organised and conducted numerous workshops on radiology quality assurance, digital imaging and scientific writing, nurturing generations of medical physicists across Asia and beyond. His research leadership spans breast imaging, interventional radiology, radiation safety and radiation dosimetry. He has also initiated and led several interdisciplinary research initiatives that seek to situate medical physics within its broader societal, ethical and scientific contexts.
Professor Ng has served as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and as an expert consultant to the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Professor Ng is the founding and emeritus president of the South East Asian Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (SEAFOMP), a past president of the Asia-Oceania Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (AFOMP), and the founder of the ASEAN College of Medical Physics (ACOMP), where he currently serves as the director.
Jeannie Hsiu Ding Wong, PhD, DIMPCB, is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya and Manager of the Medical Physics Centre at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. Trained in biomedical engineering and medical physics at Universiti Malaya and the University of Wollongong, she has devoted her career to advancing radiation dosimetry and the safe, optimised use of medical imaging technologies. Her work reflects a sustained commitment to scientific innovation and patient safety. In recognition of her prominent contributions, Professor Wong received the SEAFOMP Young Leader Award in 2019 and holds Fellowships from the Malaysian Institute of Physics and the Malaysian Association of Medical Physics. Her scholarly output includes over 100 peer-reviewed papers, several book chapters, and a co-authored textbook. She has secured RM 2.4 million in research grants and delivered over 50 invited lectures worldwide.
Beyond scholarship, Professor Wong is deeply engaged in mentoring, education, and professional formation. As a long-standing educator and former coordinator of the Master of Medical Physics Programme, she has supervised over 70 postgraduate candidates. She has organised numerous workshops on radiation dosimetry and scientific writing, nurturing generations of medical physicists. Her research leadership spans breast radiomics, artificial intelligence, and interventional radiology safety.
Professor Wong has served as a Principal Investigator for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). She is actively involved in regional leadership as a Scientific Committee Member for the Asia-Oceania Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (AFOMP) and Secretary of the Institute of Physics Malaysia, Medical Physics Division.
Geoffrey D. Clarke, PhD, FACR, FAAPM, is Professor of Radiology at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s (UTSA) Long School of Medicine. He is also the Associate Director and Chief of the MRI Division at the Research Imaging Institute at UTSA. Dr. Clarke is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (ACR), American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), and the American College of Medical Physics (ACMP). He has mentored 20 PhD students in medical physics, two Doctor of Medical Physics students, and three MS degrees in medical physics.
Professor Clarke has developed imaging technologies and magnetic resonance spectroscopic methods with specific emphasis on studying head trauma, heart disorders, and diabetes-related diseases. He has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 20 book chapters and 3 books as author or co-author. He has also delivered scores of scientific presentations and invited lectures across the world. Dr. Clarke has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Radiological Society of North America, and several commercial enterprises. His current research includes developing methods for evaluating skeletal muscle metabolism in diabetes and investigating sex differences in cardiac function in health and disease using magnetic resonance.
Professor Clarke has served in leadership positions on boards and committees for various societies, including the AAPM, Commission for Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP), ACR, ABMP, and ACMP.
