Effective Assistive Technology for Dementia
Addressing Barriers to Engagement
Andrea Tales | Clive Thomas | Rowan Brown
Despite the substantial development of SMART and assistive technologies designed for use by people living with dementia and caregivers, a substantial body of evidence indicates that the adoption and success of some of these products can be low. This book addresses this issue by raising awareness of the barriers preventing uptake, and the reasons why they exist, along with presenting potential solutions.
Examining a range of barrier influences, from a lack of co-production with people living with dementia and caregivers to digital inequalities, the book helps technology developers pre-empt issues so that their products are fit for use. It draws on theoretical frameworks for understanding cognitive principles of design and engagement with health technologies, as well as principles and good practice guidelines for assistive technology. It also considers whether attention should be focused on developing new technologies for people with dementia and caregivers, or rather on making existing technologies more dementia-friendly.
This is essential reading for academics, health and social care professionals and technology developers working with people living with dementia.
