How to Teach Stage Management

A Guide to Developing an Inclusive Pedagogy Practice for Mentoring the Next Generation of Stage Managers

Renee E. Yancey

Performing Arts / Theater / Stagecraft & Scenography

How to Teach Stage Management, the first book to focus exclusively on the practice of teaching stage management, is a comprehensive resource for stage management instructors and serves as a guide for how to design coursework that will foster learning environments that prepare emerging stage managers to develop the necessary skills to thrive in theatre and the live performing arts.

This book includes insights on how to approach multiple levels of stage management courses, including foundations to advanced, professional preparation, and stage management practicum, with suggested learning outcomes, discussion topics, class exercises, and assignments. Each chapter features inclusive pedagogy strategies specifically tailored to that level of stage management course. Instructor resources include course outlines and suggested readings for readers to customize as they develop their own course suited to their personal approach and student population. This book will help guide instructors in developing their students’ ability to adapt to the specific needs of the people and the process, clearly communicate by speaking the languages of the actors, directors, designers, and production staff that are members of their team, facilitate an inclusive space that allows for creative exploration, and engage and contribute as an artful collaborator in support of the storytelling.

This book is written for stage management instructors in higher education and students in Theatre pedagogy or Theatre education programs.
