A Comprehensive Guide

Shumaila Masood | Md. Abdus Salam Shaik

Technology & Engineering / Food Science / General

In the face of escalating environmental concerns and the urgent necessity for sustainable solutions, this book explores the state-of-the-art transformation of organic waste into high-performance, eco-friendly materials. It delves into the valorization of food processing, agricultural and marine by-products, highlighting modern techniques for material extraction, modification and enhancement. It also investigates the role of nanomaterials in improving packaging attributes, addresses regulatory and industrial challenges and shows real world applications aligned with circular economy principles. Waste Valorization for Food Packaging provides readers significant insights into the future of green packaging solutions.

Key Features:

  • Examines the valorization of diverse heterogeneous organic waste streams, including agricultural residues, food processing by-products and marine-based wastes/by-products
  • Highlights the rich composition of these waste streams in bioactive compounds and bio-based polymers
  • Explores how the functional and bioactive components in these resources can be utilized for fabrication of functional, eco-friendly and safe food packaging materials
  • Analyzes emerging material fabrication techniques such as 3D printing and discusses pilot-scale studies and commercial prospects

Dr. Shumaila Masood, PhD United Arab Emirates University, United Arab Emirates Dr. Shumaila Masood completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry, from Jamia Millia Islamia, recently in 2023. She worked at the Inorganic Materials Research Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India. During her Ph.D. she worked towards the sustainable development of polymers from bio-waste for protective coating application. She has presented her work at various international/national conferences both in India and abroad. She received the best poster award at two of the conferences. She has seven research papers in reputed Q1 journals. She has authored three book chapters for reputed international publishers. Also, she has a registered Indian patent. Later, she joined Research and Development team at Indian Institute of Packaging, Mumbai, India, as a Research Associate. Currently she is a Postdoctoral fellow in Department of Food Sciences, Center for Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, United Arab Emirates University. She is working on the valorization of industrial waste for food packaging applications.

Dr. Abdus Salam Shaik, PhD NIIT University, Rajasthan Dr. Md Abdus Salam Shaik earned his Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry in 2024 from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, following an MSc from Jamia Millia Islamia and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Calcutta. During the doctoral research, he focused on the synthesis of carbon-based nanomaterials and their advanced applications in chemical sensing. His work also explored excited-state dynamics using ultrafast spectroscopy to better understand the photophysical behavior of these nanomaterials. He has published several research articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented his findings at both national and international scientific conferences. Currently, He is working as an assistant professor in NIIT University, Rajasthan. He was also invited to present his work at an international conference.
