His Life and Work

Mannie Sher | David Lawlor

Business & Economics / Organizational Development

This book explores the role of Eric Miller in establishing and developing the practice and application of the systems psychodynamics paradigm to organisational development consultancy, research, and training.

The book covers the key areas of Miller’s focus: developing the idea and role of the consultant; the importance of psychoanalytical thinking and socio-technical systems; the need for a deep understanding of group work; the application of his ideas in a wide variety of different urban and rural settings; and the role of women in organisations.

With contributions from across the world of organisation consultancy and systems psychodynamics, this is key reading for anyone interested in group dynamics, organisational work, and the application of systems psychodynamics interventions in business and societal settings.

Mannie Sher is a principal researcher, consultant, and trustee at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations. His work draws on a psycho-social approach, exploring links between individual and collective dynamics, and is grounded in a belief that democracy, social constructivism, and psychological insight foster healthier societies. He is co-author of the three-volume Systems Psychodynamics series (2022–2023).

David Lawlor is a professional partner at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, specialising in systems psychodynamics, organisational consultancy, and action research.
