Designing Inter- and Transdisciplinary Education

A Practical Handbook for University Teachers

Education / Teaching / General

The urgent challenges of our time - climate change, technological disruption, social inequality - demand inter-and transdisciplinary approaches. Inter- and transdisciplinary (ITD) education is therefore increasingly vital in preparing students to address these challenges - challenges that cannot be understood or resolved within the confines of a single discipline, sector, or type of knowledge. This new edition of Designing Inter- and Transdisciplinary Education offers a structured, practice-informed guide grounded in real-world experimentation, critical reflection, and continuous development.

Directors, developers, trainers, and lecturers engage with these questions on a daily basis - not only conceptually, but through years of hands-on experience in designing, teaching, and supporting ITD education. This book presents this experience to inspire and support others and to offer guidance on designing effective ITD programs and courses: How do we teach the craft of integration, not just multiple perspectives? What makes an inter- and transdisciplinary curriculum truly work? What does it take to realize an ITD program?

The book also invites lecturers and institutions to recognize ITD education as a compelling opportunity to rethink the purposes and practices of higher education. The future of ITD in higher education requires vision, courage, and institutional imagination. Meeting this challenge requires more than curricular reform. This book offers tools and inspiration to support that endeavor for interdisciplinary initiatives in higher education.
