Developmental Trauma and Fawning in Children

First Steps to Understanding and Support

Leanne McIver

Psychology / Psychotherapy / Child & Adolescent

Much of the existing literature on childhood trauma centers on disruptive behaviours that signal a child's distress. Developmental Trauma and Fawning in Children instead focuses on children whose fear and distress leads to compliant, undemanding, or helpful behaviour. Known as fawning, these behaviours often emerge in situations that feel unsafe to a child, but often go unrecognised, which can seriously impact their mental health and wellbeing.

Drawing from attachment, polyvagal and obedience theories, chapters explore what is meant by fawning, consider the causes and impact of developmental trauma and provide a comprehensive overview of the existing evidence in these areas. Readers will also find practical guidance for supporting children who have experienced developmental trauma and may be displaying fawning behaviours. Throughout, these approaches are grounded in trauma informed and relational frameworks, paired with real world examples of how adults can build trustworthiness and help children begin to feel safe.

Every adult who works with or cares for children has a role to play in helping them build trusting relationships. In children who have experienced developmental trauma, this can support their recovery. This book is essential reading for therapists, psychologists, social workers, and educators who want to notice the quiet children in their care and ask what their behaviour is really telling us.
