Weber and Simmel in Dialogue
Enduring Perspectives on Modernity, Science and Nation
Esteban Vernik | Eduardo Weisz
Weber and Simmel in Dialogue brings together leading contemporary voices in social theory to revisit and creatively conjoin the works of Max Weber and Georg Simmel - two founding figures of German sociology - offering a fresh perspective on the relevance of their insights to today's global realities.
Organized around three major themes, modernity and capitalism, the logic of the social sciences, and the problematization of war and the nation, the book provides a systematic, comparative examination of Weber and Simmel's contributions. Adopting a comparative perspective, the contributors explore enduring questions about modernity, capitalism, and the intellectual challenges posed by war and social transformation to offer a fresh perspective on the relevance of their insights to today’s global realities. Readers will gain fresh insight into topics such as the role of money and labour, the ethical dilemmas of capitalism, the irrationality of the masses, and the sociological implications of war. As such, it invites a reconsideration of the assumptions that still shape the social sciences today and reflection on the contemporary relevance of Weber and Simmel’s insights.
This book will appeal to scholars, students, and researchers in sociology, political thought, and social theory, serving as an essential resource for those seeking to deepen their understanding of Weber and Simmel and apply their ideas to contemporary issues.
