Turning Life’s Deficiencies into Unique Value Propositions
Robinson De Jesús
Robinson De Jesús spent over fifteen years in field of Internal audit; as a Corporate Auditor inside Kraft Foods, Merrill Lynch, and Moody's, learning to find risk before it found you, as well as a software consultant and management team member for an audit management solution, helping organizations improve their audit processes. Long before that, he learned the same lesson watching his father cut hair in a Bronx barbershop, and before that, landing in New York as a child from the Dominican Republic with no English and no map. One Line at a Time argues that none of those experiences were separate. They were the same training, repeated in different rooms.
This book translates the methodology Fortune 500 companies pay millions to build internally (risk assessment, variance analysis, control implementation, workpaper documentation), into a language and tools a small business owner can use the same day. Each chapter follows the same structure an auditor would recognize: a finding grounded in real experience, the framework it produces, and a self-audit workpaper the reader completes on their own business or career.
The book draws its frameworks from unlikely places (a barbershop, a bodega, a JFK arrivals hall, a Wall Street trading floor), and treats all of them as legitimate sources of professional methodology. It is written for the barber, the contractor, the solo tax preparer, and the auditor at any level who has ever sensed that the discipline they need already exists somewhere, just not where they were told to look for it.
Robinson De Jesús is a global business strategist, an auditor, and the founder of Efficient Advice, LLC. His career is defined by a unique "Reverse Commute"—bridging the gap between the gritty "Humble Working Hands" economy of The Bronx, and the high-stakes "Clean Hands" world of global finance.
Robinson’s journey began not in a boardroom, but when he arrived in the United States from the Dominican Republic with a suitcase full of dreams and a language he couldn't speak. The son of a barber with a second-grade education, Robinson taught himself basic English by watching television commercials and navigating the streets of New York City. In his father’s barbershop, he learned the fundamentals of customer service and the art of the Street Hustle. He turned a community college education at Hostos into a launchpad, eventually earning his Bachelor’s degree from Baruch College and landing roles at some of the world's most prestigious financial institutions.
Robinson went from an ESL student in The Bronx to a Corporate Auditor and Risk Assessment Professional for Fortune 500 giants, including Altria Group, Inc (Kraft Foods), Moody’s Investor Services, and Merrill Lynch. He later served as the Latin America Director for Wolters Kluwer’s TeamMate, supervising operations in more than 20 countries across continents and managing risks totaling billions. Robinson has traveled to 24 countries across South America, Europe, and Asia, including Dubai, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Panama, Spain, and Ireland, to represent his organization’s vision and ensure the integrity of the world's largest financial systems.
Today, Robinson applies that same corporate rigor to Main Street. His private consulting practice helps small business owners move from "survival mode" to "systems mode" by deploying the risk assessments, internal controls, and efficiency protocols usually reserved for billion-dollar corporations. He specializes in helping tax preparers, entrepreneurs, and small business owners navigate complex regulations (such as IRS Rules) and leverage modern tools (such as AI) without breaking the bank.
He is a sought-after speaker on entrepreneurship, the immigrant economic experience, and financial literacy. Robinson is an active member of the Hostos Community College Alumni Association. He lives in Yonkers, New York, where he continues to prove that the most valuable lessons aren't found in a textbook, but in the variance between where you start and where you finish.
