Romanian-Russian Relations from the Congress of Berlin to the Bulgarian Crisis (1878–1887)

Adrian-Bogdan Ceobanu

History / Europe / Eastern

This volume examines Romanian-Russian relations, defined across every period by distrust, influence, alliances, rivalry, and tension rather than good-neighborly ties, carrying resentments dating back to the Russian Empire's 1812 annexation of Bessarabia, then part of Moldavia, that remain visible in Romanian society today.

It traces the evolution of bilateral relations between two defining moments: the decisions made in Berlin in the summer of 1878 and the Bulgarian crisis and its resolution, together with its implications for Russia's policy in the Balkans. Within this timeframe, marked by events of both regional and European significance, it examines bilateral relations from political-diplomatic, cultural, and economic perspectives, offering readers a multidimensional understanding of this long and complex relationship.

Romanian-Russian Relations from the Congress of Berlin to the Bulgarian Crisis (1878–1887) is written for professors, researchers, and students interested in the foreign policies of Russia and Romania, as well as in the evolution of international relations after 1878, a period marked by the formation of alliance systems and recurring crises in the Balkan Peninsula.
