Transgender Theory

An Introduction

Ciara Cremin | Ciara Cremin | Abraham Weil | Abraham Weil

Social Science / Gender Studies

Providing the first introduction to the key scholars, theories and debates in trans studies, Transgender Theory is an expansive and inclusive contribution to a nascent field. Each chapter offers a distinct and interconnected perspective on the various intersections of transgender lives and struggles around the world. From its prehistory (before the term transgender was common currency) through to the latest scholarship, the book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of trans scholarship. The narrative is deepened through the co-authors' (one a trans woman the other a trans man) personal perspectives and insights on being trans / becoming woman and man. The book speaks directly to those who are questioning their designated gender, coming out as trans or non-binary or, like the authors, undergoing an unending process of gender transition, a transition without destination.

Ciara Cremin is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Auckland where she also leads the gender studies programme. She is author of many books on politics, gender and philosophy including Man-Made Woman (2016) and The Future is Feminine: Capitalism and the Masculine Disorder (Bloomsbury, 2021). She is co-editor with Abraham Weil of the series Transgender Theory forthcoming with Bloomsbury.

Abraham Weil is an Assistant Professor in women, gender and sexuality studies at California State University Long Beach, USA. He is the general co-editor of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly. He is co-editor with Ciara Cremin of the series Transgender Theory forthcoming with Bloomsbury.
