Froebel, Literacy and Mathematics
Jane Whinnett | Sacha Powell | Tina Bruce
This open access book offers a Froebelian perspective on the topics of literacy and mathematics in early childhood, providing research-informed guidance for students and practitioners. Inspired by Froebel, the author suggests moving away from the traditional demarcation of subject areas by using Froebel's 3Rs: relationships, real experiences, and representations. The book covers a range of themes including building attachment; family; community; cooking, gardening and constructing as tools for learning; and how painting, drawing, dancing, making music or building with blocks can lead to stronger literacy and maths comprehension. Froebel's key works and concepts are also introduced and tied to literacy and maths, these include Froebel's gifts, Mother/ Family Songs, play and the kindergarten.
