Articulating the Soul of Liberal Education

A Body of Learning

Kevin M. Kambo | Christopher M. Petter

Education / Philosophy, Theory & Social Aspects

This edited collection argues that liberal education promotes freedom, understood as a 'human good'. Each chapter focuses on particular human faculties including the ability to think, to see, to trust, to listen, to speak thoughtfully, to praise etc and shows how liberal learning develops these faculties. By encouraging the reader to go beyond discussions about what liberal education is and is not, and towards what it is meant to achieve in the person, the contributors opens up new avenues for thinking and speaking about liberal education. The philosophers and writers covered in the book include Descartes, Socrates, Virgil, Heidegger, Balthasar, Messiaen and Thomas More. The chapters avoid older conversations on liberal education and it's dichotomies, such as humanities vs. sciences, intrinsic vs. instrumental goods, intellectual vs moral formation, and reimagine it for the contemporary moment.

Kevin M. Kambo is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at The University of Dallas, USA.
Christopher M. Petter is Assistant Professor of English, The University of St Thomas, Houston, USA.
