This book provides a recalibration of the history of computing that foregrounds globally entangled perspectives on the socio-digital interdependencies of geographical and ideological spheres since the 1950s. While smartphones, social media, and AI chatbots profoundly shape our 21st-century world, History of Technology Volume 35 reveals how computing technologies have evolved over the decades into a global force with far-reaching social, economic, and political consequences.

This volume places history at the heart of debates about digital transformations and global divides. Moving beyond scholarship centered on Europe and the United States, the book explores the entanglement of the digital and the social from globally interconnected perspectives. The chapters examine computing through four interrelated lenses:

· digital and analog divides in a globalized world
· global ambitions and local resistances
· corporate entanglements and international cooperation
· nation-building and digital sovereignty

Case studies range from computer advertising in authoritarian Brazil and IBM training centers in Senegal to the struggles of the computer industry in the Soviet Bloc, the debates on the World Wide Web in Switzerland, the take-off of IT offshoring in India, and a new semiconductor diplomacy in twenty-first-century Taiwan. Together, these essays offer a global history of computing from the 1950s to the 2000s, illuminating how technological change and social transformation have been inextricably intertwined.
