Antenna Array Design

Technology & Engineering / Microwaves

The rapid growth of wireless infrastructure has created a new and highly demanding market for phased arrays. While traditionally phased arrays were only used in radar and high-end communication systems, the new market aims to expand the use of phased arrays to a very large scale, from the new generations of mobile phones to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. As a result, there is considerable interest in creating the new generation of phased array systems, which arguably require higher efficiency to integrate with regular consumer electronics. Most books on phased arrays are focused on antenna aspects or applications such as radar, but they don’t teach how to design an antenna array system from the ground up. The aim of this work is to provide a text that guides the reader through a step-by-step process to design modern antenna arrays while understanding the system level requirements in each stage of the process. With a plethora of supplementary material which includes Matlab programs and electromagnetic models with commercial software, this is a complete guide to designing, building, and testing antenna arrays.

Payam Nayeri, Assistant Professor, Electrical Engineering Department, California Polytechnic State University, USA (Jun. 2022 – Present). Payam Nayeri received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2012 from the University of Mississippi, University, MS, USA. From 2014 to 2022 he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines holding various positions. His research interests are in wireless communication systems with a focus on surface electromagnetics, antennas and phased arrays, reflectarrays and array lenses, digital arrays and array processing, microwave and millimeter-wave devices, and application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and mathematical programming techniques to these domains. Prof. Nayeri is a Senior Member of IEEE, and since 2019 has been serving as an Associate Editor for IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters.

Randy L. Haupt, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO (2012-2021), now a consultant. He received a Ph.D. degree in EE from the University of Michigan in 1987 and has worked as a Project Engineer with the OTH-B radar and a Research Antenna Engineer with the Rome Air Development Center. His expertise is in antennas, phased arrays, smart antennas, genetic algorithms and optimization, signal processing, and wireless communications. Professor Haupt is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
