Arabic Language Education in Islamic Schools in the West

Realities and Renewal

Nadia Selim | Mohamad Abdalla

Education / Teaching / Subjects / Language Arts

This volume examines Arabic language teaching and learning in Islamic schools within English-dominant Muslim-minority contexts in the West. The Islamic schooling sector in the West has experienced rapid growth, driven by the rising demand for faith-based education among Muslim families. Islamic schools aspire to nurture and preserve Islamic identity and foster connections with the wider Muslim community by offering Qurʾān, Islamic studies, and Arabic language programs. This book consolidates existing scholarship, introduces new insights and theoretical perspectives, and outlines pathways for the renewal of Arabic language education in Islamic schools.

Nadia Selim is a Lecturer in the Discipline of Arabic Language and Cultures at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her research explores Arabic language learning and teaching, with particular emphasis on student motivation and engagement, as well as Arabic language education in Islamic schools and within Islamic civilizational history.

Mohamad Abdalla (AM) is Professor of Islamic Studies in the School of Education at Adelaide University and the Founding Director of the Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE), Australia. With over three decades of experience, he has contributed to advancing research on Islamic Studies and Islamic schooling in Australia.
