Science / Life Sciences / Zoology / General

Mammals of Middle and South America: Eulipotyphla presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of the families Solenodontidae, Soricidae, and Talpidae in this biologically rich region. Covering one of the least-known groups of mammals in the region, this authoritative volume provides detailed accounts of all 91 recognized species of Middle and South American eulipotyphlans, including those of the Caribbean. It also includes dedicated chapters on the extinct family Nesophontidae and extinct species of Solenodontidae, offering a unique perspective on both the living and vanished diversity of the region. This volume represents the first comprehensive synthesis of the region’s extant and extinct eulipotyphlan diversity.
Written by an international team of specialists, each species account synthesizes current knowledge of taxonomy, fossil record, distribution, morphology, genetics, life history, habitat, diet, behavior, parasites and diseases, and population ecology. The volume further explores the ecological significance, management, conservation status, and research priorities of these often-overlooked mammals.
Richly illustrated with high-quality photographs of live animals and specimens from biological collections, detailed distribution maps, and carefully selected key references, this book combines scientific rigor with accessibility. As part of the Handbook of the Mammals of Middle and South America, it provides an unparalleled reference for researchers, conservationists, wildlife professionals, students, and anyone seeking a definitive overview of the region's remarkable eulipotyphlan diversity.

Lázaro Guevara is a researcher at the National Collection of Mammals of the Institute of Biology, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. His main research interests are the taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, ecology, and conservation of small mammals in the Neotropics. He mainly focuses on shrew species that are very little known and highly threatened by global change. He is also interested in the history of mammalogy and the work in natural history collections.

Miguel A. León Tapia is a mammalian specialist who graduated from the Institute of Ecology, A.C. His main research interests are the taxonomy, systematics, and biogeography of small mammals in the Nearctic and Neotropics. He conducts fieldwork in remote areas and uses biological collections as vast resources of morphological, molecular, and spatial data to understand the evolution of species in highly biodiverse regions.
