This book is the 8th volume of the Advances in Psychology and Law book series, which focuses on topics at the nexus of psychology and law. The field of psychology and law is expanding rapidly, as courts and policy makers pay more attention than ever before to psychological research (e.g., eyewitness and expert testimony, jury instructions, forensic assessment and risk reduction), creating new opportunities for psychological research to contribute to efforts to improve the justice system. The present volume seeks to enhance understanding of the connections between these disciplines, present “state of the science” summaries for current researchers and chart a course for future research.

The book consists of up-to-date reviews of topics relevant to psychology and law and will be of current interest to both researchers and practitioners in the field. In this 8th volume of the series, authors address the following topics:

This volume innovates from previous volumes in the series by including shorter essays in addition to the traditional full-length chapters. These shorter essays address topics which do not yet possess a well-developed previous literature, in an effort to cover emerging topics that are “advances” which this series seeks to attract. 

Monica K. Miller is a Foundation Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno where she is the director of the Judicial Studies Ph.D. Program. She is on the editorial board of the journal Psychology, Crime & Law, and is the editor of the APA Books series for the American Psychology-Law Society. She has authored 5 books and has edited 14 books for Springer, Cambridge University Press, and Oxford University Press among other publishers.

David DeMatteo is a Professor of Psychology and Professor of Law at Drexel University, where he is also Director of the J.D./Ph.D. Program in Law and Psychology. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Law and Human Behavior, and he has published 100+ peer-reviewed articles, 15+ books, and 50+ book chapters. He is a former President of the American Psychology-Law Society and the American Board of Forensic Psychology.

Daniel A. Krauss is Crown Professor of Psychology and George R. Roberts Fellow in the Department of Psychological Science at Claremont McKenna College. He holds a J.D. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Arizona. His research focuses on forensic mental health assessment, expert evidence, and jury decision-making. He has published over 75 scholarly works and is a former president of the American Board of Forensic Psychology.
