This book introduces Urban Plasticity, a new theoretical framework for understanding how cities learn, adapt, remember, and recover in an age of uncertainty. Drawing on complexity science and insights from neuroplasticity, it reinterprets cities as dynamic systems capable of reorganising through feedback, memory, experimentation, and collective learning.

Moving beyond traditional approaches that focus on urban form, Urban Plasticity examines the processes through which cities respond to climate change, social inequality, public health challenges, technological transformation, and crisis. The book explores how urban systems sense their environments, accumulate knowledge, forget, rewire infrastructures and institutions, recover from trauma, and build adaptive capacity over time.

Bridging urban studies, planning, complexity theory, governance, and cognitive science, the book develops a process-oriented understanding of urban change. It extends contemporary thinking on Complex Adaptive Systems by offering new conceptual tools for explaining how adaptation occurs, how memory is stored within cities, and how learning shapes future development.

Through discussions of sensing cities, urban feedback systems, infrastructure adaptation, spatial justice, collective memory, and adaptive planning, the book presents a new vocabulary for understanding urban transformation. It contributes to sustainable urban futures by addressing not only what cities become, but how they change, emphasising process over form, adaptation over stability, and memory over master plans.

Dr Najmeh Mozaffaree Pour is an urban researcher whose work focuses on complexity science, spatial planning, and sustainable urban futures. Her research spans urban modelling, accessibility, health-oriented planning, and the application of complexity thinking to contemporary urban challenges. 

She has authored numerous publications on urban planning, spatial justice, the 15-minute city, spatial accessibility, healthscapes, and urban modelling. She continues to explore how cities learn, adapt, and reorganise in the face of uncertainty.
