This book demonstrates that mathematical logic, while being one of the most fascinating and fundamental areas of mathematics, is also associated with a significant level of conceptual difficulty. This challenge is reflected in most existing textbooks on the subject.
Accordingly, there is a clear need for a reader-friendly textbook that systematically presents the foundational principles of mathematical logic in a clear, accessible, and pedagogically effective manner. This book fulfills that need by offering a thorough and structured exposition of the basic concepts, complemented by carefully selected exercises and illustrative examples that demonstrate their practical application.
The structure of the book follows the syllabus of standard university courses in mathematical logic and related topics. Originally developed from lecture notes prepared for teaching purposes, the material has been substantially expanded and refined into a complete and self-contained textbook.
The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive reference for the study of mathematical logic, both at a theoretical and a practical level, for undergraduate and graduate-level courses in mathematical logic and related areas.
Athanasios I. Margaris currently works at the Department of Informatics in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as an Adjunct Lecturer. Athanasios does research in Algorithms, Artificial Neural Networks and Applied Mathematics. He received his BSc in Physics from the Department of Physics of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1992, his MSc in Computer Science from the Computer Science Department of the University of Sheffield in 1995 and his PhD in Computer Science from the Department of Applied Informatics of the University of Macedonia in 2003. The subject of his PhD thesis was the study of chaotic attractors and nonlinear systems with the help of neural networks as well as of the chaotic features of these structures. The last 25 years he has been working as a Part Time Lecturer and Assistant Professor in Higher Education, teaching Physics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. His research interests include among others, mathematical physics, digital signal processing, neural networks, as well as parallel and distributed systems. He has published over 50 research and conference papers in scientific journals and proceedings of Greek and International conferences. Currently, he is the author of 7 books on Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, as well as the translator of 17 other books on related subjects, from English to Greek.
